Pictures at an Exhibition

To coincide with Rye Arts Festival (which starts on 14th September), there are three new exhibitions at Rye Art Gallery opening on 7th September. Each exhibition features a local artist.

Edward Burra's A Family View has works from the gallery's permanent exhibition plus previously unseen letters, photos and other documents from the gallery's archive. The painter, who has an international reputation, lived most of his life (1905-76) in Rye, although much of his most famous work is from travels to Harlem and Spain.

Neil Meacher's Sketchbook in my Pocket is a retrospective of his pictures and fantastic sketchbooks. His works often have a wry (or Rye?) sense of humour and they are strongly graphical. Neil was muched loved in Rye and  also by his many former students from his career as a lecturer at art college. He is sadly missed but his work lives on and is sure to raise a smile.

And David Crew's Where the Path Leads shows new works that inhabit a world that is both real and imagined - paintings that will make you think.
