Rye Arts Festival hunts around the world for the very best talent to come to Rye in the last two weeks of September. And this year, marking the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the UK, the
organisers have booked a trio of Dames to entertain at what has been described
as one of the UK’s best arts festivals – Jenni Murray, Joan Ruddock and Emma
Kirkby. Dame Jenni Murray is the doyenne of radio presenters; Dame Joan Ruddock
is a politician and campaigner of considerable note and Dame Emma Kirkby is a soprano with worldwide
reputation.

Dame Jenni Murray closes the Festival on Sunday 30th
September at the Milligan Theatre in Rye College. She hardly needs any
introduction, since she has been a fixture on BBC Radio 4 for many decades,
presenting Women’s Hour since 1987, Dame Jenni Murray is the author of several
books, and her latest, A
History of the World in 21 Women (which is published on 6th
September) looks at the great women, rescuing some from
obscurity and shining a new light on familiar names. These are women who led while others followed. They stood up and spoke
out when no one else would. They broke the mould in art, journalism and
politics. Each fought, in her own way, for change. For example, Joan of Arc,
Catherine the Great, Madonna, and Frida Kahlo are included.

An audience with Dame
Jenni Murray promises to be lively and entertaining and in this centenary year
a fabulous way to close the Festival.

But the Rye Arts
Festival this year opens with another British woman of great note – Dame Joan
Ruddock, who will be speaking at Rye Community Centre at 11am on Saturday 15th
September.

Dame Joan is lifelong feminist and environmentalist, and she
first came to national attention in the 1980s when she became chair of CND. She
then moved into mainstream politics, and was elected to parliament in 1987
after winning the Lewisham Deptford constituency in 1987. She was re-elected in
the deprived inner London borough a further five times.

Her Parliamentary career was hugely impressive and Dame Joan
held numerous shadow briefs before becoming the very first full time
Minister for Women in 1997, a post which was only created a full 79 years
after women were given the vote! Dame Joan will be introduced by her
Parliamentary colleague, and former Hastings and Rye MP, Michael Foster.

be the English soprano Dame Emma Kirkby, who will be performing on Friday 28th
September at St Mary’s Church in Rye with the Dowland Works ensemble.

Dame Emma is unquestionably one of the world’s most famous
early music specialists and her uncommonly pure, crystalline voice is ideally
suited for early, Renaissance and Baroque music. She will be supported by the
other singers and a table full of lute players from Dowland Works.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">This year’s Festival has two underlying themes – the centenary of the end of World War I and the centenary of women’s suffrage – and there will be a number of events that tap into these areas, as well as others which have been put on because they are simply high-quality entertainment.
A pair of actors perform the scripts of three classic Dad’s Army episodes doing all the voices of the TV cast members with uncanny accuracy, as well as getting their mannerisms down to a tee. And it reveals that the great Statesman spent a lifetime keeping his head just above water when it came to his private financial affairs.

At a talk on September 23rd David Lough, who is a former City financier and who has made a forensic study of Churchill's finances, will reveal an extraordinary account of the one-time Chancellor of the Exchequer's struggle with his own money.

Lough has discovered that Churchill lost huge sums at casinos around Europe, escaped bankruptcy through secret bailouts by shady private donors and gambled disastrously on financial instruments. And, at the same time, he ran a lavish lifestyle he believed befitting a member of the grand Marlborough family but without the land or cash ion the bank of a Duke to fund it!
However, amazingly, he earned large sums from journalism and writing, picking up a Nobel Prize for Literature along the way. Indeed, Lough estimates that Churchill's earnings as a war correspondent meant he trousered the equivalent of £100,000 a month - which makes Boris Johnson's recent scribblings for The Daily Telegraph at £5,000 seem positively mean in comparison!

Tickets for what promises to be a really fascinating talk, which will be at 3.00pm in the George in Rye hotel, cost just £12 and can be booked online at www.ryeartsfestival.co.uk
Rye Arts Festival is proud of the work it does behind the scenes providing a series of exclusive masterclasses and special performances for the students of Rye's schools. Today, Wednesday 9th September, Charlie Cobb - who is the Artists in Residence for the duration (11-27 Sept) of this year's Festival - is arriving in Rye and he is going straight away to the Rye Studio School to give an art masterclass for the students. Charlie painted all the paintings in the film Mr Turner and also worked on the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, but during the Festival he will be working from a pop-up gallery/studio in the former Sweet Memories of Rye sweetshop in the High Street.

He will also be holding a couple of masterclasses for the public on 14th and 25th September at the School Creative Centre and Lamb House Garden respectively - tickets can be bought from online the website www.ryearstfestival.co.uk or at the Box Office or phone 01797 224442.

Rannveig Karadottir and Peter Aisher are the vanguard of the singers, with the rest arriving for the final rehearsals which start in Rye on Wednesday. Rannveig plays Donna Anna and Peter is Don Ottavio in this year's production from the fantastic Euphonia Company, who have graced Rye Arts Festival with an opera for four of the last five years. Euphonia's opera productions are seen only at Rye, but for the first time this year there will be two performances of Don Giovanni, with the second show on Saturday 26th September.
Eagle-eyed readers will remember Rannveig, who gave a triumphant performance as Violetta in last year's La Traviata at Rye Arts Festival. And the Icelandic soprano's stage love interest in the opera last year was... Peter Aisher! Great to see them both back! Alexander Panfilov, who is playing at Rye Arts Festival on 16th September, was selected last night to go through to the semi-final of the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition.

The Russian pianist has worked hard and faced a huge challenge to reach this far of the triennial Leeds Competition with 79 pianists from around the World chosen to compete in the first round, selected from hundreds of applications! This was reduced to just over 30 for the second round and now 12 go through to the semis which take place over the next three days.

Alexander won the 2015 Hastings Piano Competition earlier in the year and, as part of his prize, he was given an engagement at his year's Rye Arts Festival! Tickets are still available for the concert at St Mary's Church at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th September providing a chance to see a real star in the making!
Alexander recently won the 2015 Hastings Piano Competition and, as part of his prize, Rye Arts Festival offered him an engagement. Excitingly, Alexander is competing in the Leeds International Piano Competition and was in the quarter final at the time of writing! We all wish him well and hope he goes further and we will keep you posted.
Rehearsals for the eagerly anticipated two performances of Don Giovanni at this year's Rye Arts Festival on Saturday 12 and Saturday 26 September are under way and going well - despite the picture suggesting a mass brawl between the sopranos and tenors! The cast are currently working hard, and having fun, at a Roman Catholic church in Greenwich, south east London, under musical director/conductor Alisdair Kitchen.

And a sneak preview suggests that the fabulous young professional singers in Euphonia will be providing a production that equals and may exceed last year's triumphal La Traviata! Tickets are still available for both performances.
Altan, from Donegal, are one of the top Irish bands and on 19 September they are flying into the UK to play a one-off gig at Rye Arts Festival.
Don't miss out then on the best irish music you'll hear all year with a mixture of energetic jigs and reels and slower ballads to touch the heart and raise a tear!

If you miss this gig, you'll have to follow them to Belgium in the late autumn to catch up and, after that, you'll have to fly out to Japan where they are undergoing a major tour in December! So it's got to be Rye!
Tickets can be bought online at www.ryeartsfestival.co.ukRye Arts Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418897717258477091noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581440301365590917.post-39148510887783346072015-09-01T07:58:00.001-07:002015-09-02T00:16:54.893-07:00The Rails - Award-Winning Folk Duo

2015 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Horizon Award for best new band of the previous 12 months went to The Rails, who will be playing at Rye Arts Festival on 12 September.
Kami Thompson is the daughter of Linda and Richard Thompson, so comes from UK folk royalty! Meanwhile her husband James Walbourne has played with the Pogues and Pretenders!
This is a must-see event for all folk fans since The Rails are leading the way in terms of their contemporary take on tradition, mixing playing their own originals with songs from the canon.Rye Arts Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00418897717258477091noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581440301365590917.post-49001057456669861802015-06-19T07:24:00.000-07:002015-06-19T07:24:04.647-07:00Peasmarsh Chamber Music Festival 25-28 June
